What to Expect at Your First OMT Visit
If you've only ever seen doctors in a standard medical practice — the ones where you wait 40 minutes and see the physician for 12 — a visit to this office will feel different. Here's what to expect.
Before the Visit
When you contact the office, you'll reach Dr. Knopp or his staff directly — not a call center. There's no phone tree. You'll schedule your initial evaluation and receive any intake forms in advance.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Dr. Knopp will need to assess your posture, gait, and range of motion, and will be using his hands to examine your muscles, joints, and spine. Athletic wear or clothes you can move freely in work well.
The Initial Evaluation — $450
Your first visit is a thorough evaluation. This is not a quick screen-and-refer appointment. Dr. Knopp takes time to:
- Listen. What's happening, how long it's been going on, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping to get back to doing.
- Observe. How you stand, how you walk, where your shoulders sit relative to your hips, whether one side compensates for the other.
- Examine. Hands-on palpation of the musculoskeletal system — testing muscle tone, joint mobility, spinal alignment, pelvic symmetry, and tissue texture. This is the osteopathic exam that most physicians don't perform.
- Treat. In most cases, OMT begins at the first visit. If the evaluation reveals a treatable structural problem — a pelvic tilt, a restricted thoracic segment, a tight psoas — Dr. Knopp addresses it that day.
- Plan. A treatment plan based on what was found. This might include follow-up OMT visits, exercises, lifestyle modifications, or — if warranted — referral for imaging or interventional procedures at Hartford HealthCare.
Follow-Up Visits — $250
Return visits focus on reassessment and continued treatment. Dr. Knopp re-evaluates what changed since the last visit, adjusts the treatment approach, and performs OMT as needed. The timeline depends on the condition — some patients see significant improvement in 2-3 visits, while chronic or complex cases may require ongoing care.
What This Practice Doesn't Do
There are a few things that set this apart from what you might be used to:
- No rotating providers. You see Dr. Knopp every visit. No residents, no PAs filling in.
- No surprise billing. The cost is transparent — $450 initial, $250 follow-up. You know what you're paying before you walk in.
- No rushing. The visit takes as long as it needs to take. If the evaluation reveals something unexpected, Dr. Knopp doesn't cut it short because the next patient is waiting.
Is This Covered by Insurance?
This is a concierge practice with transparent, direct pricing. Dr. Knopp can provide documentation that you may be able to submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan. The office can discuss specifics when you schedule.
Who Should Come
This practice is built for patients who haven't gotten answers from the standard system — people with chronic or recurring pain who've been through the cycle of imaging, injections, and PT referrals without resolution. If you've been told "everything looks normal" but you still hurt, an osteopathic evaluation may find what was missed.
